Horrific Murdaugh Family Tragedy - Part Four: The Dead Murdaughs

Updated: Mar 4, 2022

For almost 100 years Alex Murdaugh’s father and grandfather ran a large and powerful private law firm in Hampton South Carolina and were also prosecutors for a five-county district in the area. Alex graduated in 1990 from USC and then the USC School of Law in 1994. He then joined up with the Murdaugh law firm known as Peters Murdaugh Parker Eltzroth & Detrick (PMPED). He also volunteered with the solicitors office at that time.

Maggie also went to the University of South Carolina, and that is where in the late 1980s she met a young man just one grade above her by the name of Alex Murdaugh. He became her first real boyfriend. They dated for a while then decided to get married once Alex was able to convince her to move to the tiny rural town of Hampton to be near his family’s law firm.

According to someone who knew Maggie, over time the couple started having some troubles, and in April of 2021 Maggie made the one hour drive to Charleston, South Carolina to meet with a divorce lawyer. Around that time Maggie was also apparently looking into the family’s finances as she prepared for a potential divorce from Alex.

A friend of the family says she never paid much attention to the finances or where all their money came from. She hadn’t worked outside of the house much over the years. She ran a business in downtown Hampton for a short time, but other than that she spent her time raising the couple’s kids Buster and Paul. She knew they were doing great financially thanks to Alex’s job, so it wasn’t something she worried about.

The questions now are how serious was she about the divorce? Had she discussed the idea of a divorce with Alex? What had she found while looking into the family’s financial situation? We may never get the answers to these questions because on June 7th 2021 she was found dead at the family hunting property known as Moselle along with her 22-year-old son Paul. Alex found their bodies.

Two different guns were used in the murder. Shell casings were found at the murder location. No one has been arrested or charged in the murders. Alex was named a person of interest in the case. Everything Maggie owned was left to Alex in her will. Alex claims to have a good alibi for the time of the killings though saying he was visiting with his mother who has dementia.

When Paul died he was facing multiple felony charges stemming from a boat accident that killed a 19-year-old girl by the name of Mallory Beach. Paul was allegedly driving the boat drunk at the time of the crash. Charges were dropped after his death. We look into this story much more in our video we did about it which we will link below.

Alex has since been arrested on other charges. Some of those charges involved stealing money from a housekeeper by the name of Gloria Satterfield who was working at this property when she apparently fell down the stairs on the front porch and hit her head. She later died at the hospital. We have more about that story in another video we did which we will also link below.

The Murdaugh family is offering a $100,000 reward for anyone with information leading to the arrest of the killer or killers.

Maggie and Paul were both cremated.

Maggie’s obituary says Margaret “Maggie” Kennedy Branstetter Murdaugh, 52, entered into eternal rest with her son Paul Terry Murdaugh the evening of Monday, June 7, 2021.

She graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1991, where she met her husband, Alex. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, and has kept in touch with many of these friends over the years. Maggie and Alex raised their 2 sons in Hampton, South Carolina and enjoyed spending their summers at their beach house in Edisto. Maggie had a heart of pure generosity, and loved welcoming friends and family into her home on any given occasion. She adored her family, and cherished spending time on the boat with her two sons. She will be remembered as a “second mom” to her sons’ many friends. She made the most out of every situation, and lived each and every day to the fullest.

Paul’s obituary says Paul Terry Murdaugh, 22, of Hampton, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest alongside his loving mother, Margaret Branstetter Murdaugh (Maggie) the evening of Monday, June 7, 2021.

Paul grew up with a love for the outdoors, and particularly enjoyed hunting at their lodge in Moselle with his father, Alex, and brother, Buster. He was a Junior at the University of South Carolina, where he was often found cheering on the Gamecocks with his friends and family. Paul never met a stranger, and had an abundance of friends. He was always eager to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. No one was more loving and genuine than Paul, and because of this, his personality was one-of-a-kind.

Paul is survived by his beloved father Richard Alexander Murdaugh (Alex) and his older brother Richard Alexander Murdaugh Jr. (Buster), both of whom he looked up to with all of his heart.
